SJC’s New Federal Security Director Knows Airport Security
Calvin "Cal" Yuen, the new Federal Security Director (FSD) at Mineta San José International Airport, knows Airports and Airport Security. Mr. Yuen began his career working for Pan American Airways. After leaving PanAm, he began a 20-year career with the Federal Aviation Administration. In 2002, Mr. Yuen joined the Transportation Security Administration as the Deputy Federal Security Director for California airports in Oakland, Stockton and Santa Rosa. In September 2004, Mr. Yuen became the Federal Security Director for the California airports in San Jose, Monterey and Modesto. When asked what his goal is at Mineta San José International Airport he replied, “To be the best airport in the nation and make sure the security screeners have the best possible training to keep the traveling public, airport and airline employees and crewmembers safe.”

Airport Now Equipped With High-Tech Fire Fighting Unit
Mineta San José International Airport is introducing a new addition to its fleet of on-site fire and safety service vehicles. In May, the Airport took delivery of its new Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicle, custom engineered to offer the ultimate in fast emergency response, charging from 0 to 50 miles per hour within 35 seconds. Features of the truck include an undercarriage water-cooling system that spays coolant under the vehicle, allowing it to drive over fire without damage.

Runway 30L Reopens
On Friday, October 1, 2004, Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) reopened Runway 30 Left after five months of construction improvements to enhance safety and increase efficiency for aircraft using the runways. The construction added 400 feet to each end of the runway, extending it from 10,200 feet to 11,000 feet, the maximum length allowed under the Airport’s Master Plan.

Airport Prepares for North Concourse Construction
Drivers will begin to notice a change on Airport roadways, as construction progresses on the North Concourse project, the first phase of terminal improvements at Mineta San José International Airport. To provide an added safety mechanism for our passengers while construction trucks are hauling dirt, debris and materials from the North Concourse project site to Airport Parkway and vice versa, stoplights are going up at two Airport locations—the intersection of Airport Parkway and Airport Boulevard and at Terminal Drive just south of the International Arrivals Facility.

Airport’s “ATEM” group installs solar-powered fans on Jet Bridges in move to improve customer comfort
In a move to improve customer comfort for passengers using jet bridges at gates A2 through A8 at Terminal A, employees of the Airport Facilities Division’s “ATEM,” or Airport Terminal Equipment Mechanics, recently installed solar-powered roof fans to help reduce heat and moisture build up inside the jetbridge walkways.
